What are Manholes?
Manholes are chambers constructed along some sewer lines for operators to have access to main sewer points. There are three types of manholes, namely, shallow manhole, normal manhole, and deep manhole.
Shallow manholes or inspection chambers are usually situated on highways with little traffic and volume of cars. It has a light cover on its top. The second type of manhole is a normal manhole. Unlike the shallow manhole, the normal manhole has a big and heavy top. This manhole is usually in a square shape form. The last manhole is called the deep manhole. This manhole is a lot comprehensive in structure compared to the other two manholes. Meaning, its depth can be gradually increased through time. Because of its depth, this manhole is always provided with a facility that helps operators go down.
Why are manholes necessary for drainage system?
There are four reasons as to why manholes are necessary. First, manholes are used as a portal to allow inspection, cleaning and maintenance operations. Second, manholes are needed for the construction of joint sewers, aligning sewers, and more. Third, a manhole provides good ventilation for sewers. Sewers emit a considerable amount of gases that can be combustible. To avoid accidents, manholes are constructed to let trapped gases spread out. Last, manholes help in laying down the sewer lines.
Efficient and Effective Manholes for Your Drains
There are several things to keep in mind in maintaining an efficient and effective manhole for your drains. One of the most important maintenance operations for manhole is the cleaning or drain clearing operation. If a manhole becomes inoperable due to blockage or a defect in the construction, it can lead to several problems in a property that sits on it. For example, blocked manholes can’t be properly cleaned or inspected in the future. Another problem of the poorly maintained manhole is when its top becomes damaged. Debris and water can seep inside the drainage system and add to the blockage.
With this, it is necessary to take steps into maintaining an efficient and effective manhole. One has to understand, though, that manhole maintenance should be left to the experts. Why? Manholes can’t be maintained manually. One has to employ agencies with machines that can do the job professionally. In addition to that, climbing down on manholes are not supposed to be done by untrained individuals. Manholes have hazardous gases and substances. Going down there without the proper equipment and suit can be dangerous.
